even done that, because Valbjörn had died anyway, slowly and

in agony. Egrill hadn't been there, hadn't even known until

hours and hours later.

Dagr made a small sound of pain and Egrill realized he'd

been crushing Dagr's arm. He let go and stepped back, taking

several slow, careful breaths, fighting against the pain. "No," he

said softly, barely above a whisper, hands going up to clutch at

his chest again. "No. It wasn't …"

He couldn't finish for fear he'd start hyperventilating, as

memories of the war threatened to crash down on top of him—

not just Valbjörn's death, but all the rest too.

After a time he became aware of hands on his shoulders

and back, rubbing small, soothing patterns against the damp

cloth of his tunic. He was on his knees although he couldn't

remember falling. Dagr made soft, comforting, nonsensical

sounds as he rubbed Egrill's back.

Egrill didn't know how long they sat there, but finally he

moved, standing shakily. "Thank you," he said softly, "but I'd like

it if you left now, and didn't come back, please."

There was a long pause, so long in fact that Egrill began to

wonder if Dagr had already gone. "As you like," Dagr finally said

from out of the darkness. His voice sounded very tired and very

sad.

There was a soft splash followed only by silence. Egrill stood

waist deep in the water, staring into the dark, listening to the

faint drip and the sound of his own breathing. Nothing moved in

the water, nothing else made a sound, and finally he turned

blindly towards the passageway that would take him out of the

cavern and back home.
